چکیده

Traditionally cost-benefit analysis of different farm systems and management strategies, or losses due to diseases, are based on rough estimates made by experts. The purpose of this study is to use panel data to quantify the differences experienced in real life between farmand management systems (fixed sow versus loose sows, one site versus two or multi sites, etc.) and the actual loss due to diseases like PRRS, mycoplasma etc. The advantage of using panel data is the possibility of eliminating farm and herd-specific effects like the skills of running the herd. This study combines data from quarterly technical efficiency reports since 1990, annual account figures such as gross margin per sow since 1990, and an interview covering the history of the herd. Data will be collected from 50 sow herds in South Jutland. Eventually, this analysis will lead to some conclusions pointing out the competitiveness of farm systems, health status, management strategies etc. measured by technical and economic efficiency.

Systems for Monitoring and Decision Support with Respect to Sow Longevity

The average lifetime of sows as observed in production herds is primarily influenced by management decisions. Usually the farmer decides to cull a sow, either because he expects that a gilt's average productivity is higher than the marginal productivity of the sow, or because the current number of sows exceeds the production capacity, e.g. in the farrowing department. Several studies have shown...

Modeling the Costs of Postpartum Dysgalactia Syndrome and Locomotory Disorders on Sow Productivity and Replacement

Postpartum dysgalactia syndrome (PPDS) and locomotory disorders are common health problems in sows. Previous research suggests that they can cause substantial losses, reduce sow welfare, and result in premature removal of the sow from the herd. However, economic consequences of PPDS and locomotory disorders have not been investigated thoroughly. The goal of this study was to examine economic lo...

Economic analysis of size and feed type of swine production in Hawaii

Results: The study showed wide variation across different farm sizes with respect to total economic cost and net return per 100 lb (45.4 kg) of live hog produced. The total economic cost was negatively correlated (r = -.318, P = .016) and net return was positively correlated (r = .336, P = .011) with farm size. The average net return for large herds (> 75 sows) was higher (P =.003) than for sma...

Factors for improving reproductive performance of sows and herd productivity in commercial breeding herds

We review critical factors associated with reproductive performance of female breeding pigs, their lifetime performance and herd productivity in commercial herds. The factors include both sow-level and herd-level factors. High risk sow-level groups for decreasing reproductive performance of female pigs are low or high parity, increased outdoor temperature, decreased lactation feed intake, singl...
